Biometrics are a very interesting subject and definitely have many points that could be
addressed. The articles I read provided a lot of information into the world of biometrics and its
many pros and cons. I read one positive article promoting bio-security with computers, a
negative all bio-security in general article, and one neutral article that listed pros and cons of
each. I feel that by exploring both sides I was able to get a better view of biometric security in
general and was able to avoid biased reports.
As a newer technology biometric security still has a lot of bugs to work out. One group managed
to break into every type of biometric system by using the type of strategies you see in the movies and
one the even broke by simply showing a picture of the owner in front of the screen to fool a facial
recognition scanner. They were able to fool all the systems and even fooled one with a heat sensor by
constructing a false finger. Although all these things were fooled when combined with a password these
systems have a much higher success rate than others. Biosecurity also can’t replace human intuition.
Many people argue that with biosecurity there will be less need for airport personnel but although it
could replace some people it could never do the things human intuition can do. Another problem with
biometric security is once your fingerprint is in the system you can never edit or change it. Caught in a
horrible blazing inferno because you are saving a poor child’s life and you grab a hot metal beam to pull
the two of you to safety and burn off your fingerprints you’re pretty much at a total loss.
Biosecurity also has many pros. It provides greater recognition than any other form of security.
It also helps solve the problem of the employee who always forgets his password or loses his ID cards.
Biosecurity also makes your employees feel way more legitimate and makes your business look like it is
worth way more. That’s science. Plus it’s...
