A film director must ensure that the film has important ideas that will engage the audience and then use a variety of effective techniques to present these ideas to the audience. Blade runner is classified as a dark science fiction film which is directed by Ridley Scott and released in 1982. The film text is based on the Phillip K Dick novel- “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?†that was composed in 1969. Blade runner- Director’s Cut 1992 well engages audience by using a number of themes and a wide variety of techniques. Pastiche is used a lot through the film as well. It is acclaimed as a post-modernist film which is also based on the 1940’s film noir genre. The many themes/ideas used in the film to engage the audience have well brought out Blade runner as one of the most highly praised and looked up to films. These ideas which have been brought up in Blade runner are: Bad Environmentâ€. Although the environment is portrayed as very bad through the dark lighting, high buildings, the shots of the city, the pollution and rubbish it is actually never stated. “The Loss of Individual Identity/ Globalisation†is also a vast theme used in the film. If not for the introduction before the start of the film we would have assumed that the movie was taking place among an Asian country. The last issue is the one of “What does it mean to be human? (The question of Humanity)â€, if humans are been fabricated, designed and made BY humans, if people can give life to someone by artificially making them what divides the replicants FROM the humans. There is a big crisis of definition for humanity. All of these pointers above and more are important, engaging issues for the audience.
