Boeing is known for its achievements in commercial and military aviation, defense and communication systems, and launch vehicles and missiles. The people who have never even used any of its products recognize the name worldwide. Company is most famous for the development and successful release of the 7-series commercial aircrafts. Boeing employs more than 158,000 people across the United States and in 70 countries (Boeing, 2010). With such massive operation on a wide geographic scale, company’s management strategies must be close to flawless to execute a very complex production. One of the important functions of management is planning. This function is just as influenced by legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility as any other management function. Moreover, Boeing is routinely making crucial decisions, while their strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency planning are being contentiously influenced by many factors.
The planning function of management allowing to create a working environment, in which different departments and production flows can have a reduced or eliminated threat of operational vulnerability, such as deadlines on deliverables and morale of employees. Properly created plan of actions will lead to a more effective implementation. For example, the production of the new 787 Dreamliner would secure company’s competitive advantage on the market. The objective was measured against all financial aspects and production timeline, to ensure profitability and delivery.
