The book starts out as many of Doyle’s masterpieces.
Holmes and Watson are spending time in their famous residence at 211B Baker street London. Holmes is contacted by a young lady by the name of Miss Morstan who has a claim on her deceased father’s treasure, which is in an unknown location in her father’s friend’s house. Holmes soon is attempting to track down the murderer of both Morstan’s father and another heir to the treasure (Mr.Sholto the son of Morstan’s father’s friend). To sum it up, the story consists of Holmes, Watson, Miss Morstan, and the police pursuing the criminal John Small, and his Aboriginal acommplis.
Holmes faces many problems during his pursuit of John Small. The greatest complication faced is the fact that John Small has disappeared and can’t even been found by the tracker hound Toby. The murder gives important clues to the criminals’ pasts and appearances. You learn that the actual murderer of Mr. Sholto was a dwarf aborigine, and that John Small (the planner of the murder) has a wooden leg. These clues put Holmes on the right track. Eventually Holmes finds his man by disguising as an elderly ship captain. This leads to an exciting boat chase, in which Holmes, Watson, and the police catch John Small, and shoot the Aborigine who barely misses
