Borderline Personality Disorder

When a person thinks into the world of psychology there are many different topics that may come to mind. But of the most prevalent are mental disorders. A smaller sub-category is mood disorders, and more specifically this will discuss the most beneficial treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder, or BPD for short. People with this disorder have been immune and not responding to treatments for such a time throughout history. Treatments such as psychotherapy, medication, and hospitalization, either partial or day, are treatments that may or may not work. The new rise in treating BPD patients is Dialectical Behavior Therapy, also known as DBT. DBT combines cognitive behavior therapy and Zen. Because BPD patients have a higher risk for being more hostile DBT is a new and different approach. Basically, at each weekly session the therapist and patient tackle one particular event and work through it, from the events leading up to it, to what happened after and the therapist tries to give the patient help on how to handle situations. Using the telephone between sessions is also another big factor in this treatment. Often patients with BPD will feel a sense of abandonment, whether it is real or imagined. DBT is built around the idea of dialectics, which tries to create balance between to opposing ideas. This lets the patients see in black and white, which is exactly how their brain works. Group meetings are another essential part of this kind of therapy to help the individual work on interpersonal effectiveness, core mindfulness skills, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance skills. In various studies done over the years psychologists have found that patients who received DBT were less likely to commit parasuicidal acts, more likely to stay in therapy, and required fewer days of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.
