The US Navy, day by day seems to get slimmer by the minute.   The Navy has decided to downsize and since 2002, we have gotten active duty to about 322K, and the reserves to around 68K. Doing this has only allowed the Navy to have to right amount of personnel for our future fleet and shore structure.   We all have to follow a structure to remain fighting for our country. This structure is also called the basics.   Us as Navy leaders must stress the brilliant on the basics. The basics are categorized into six programs. These are sponsorship, indoctrination, career development boards, mentorship, individual recognition and a rigorous ombudsman/family outreach program. These six programs are to help shape the foundation of a good command.
Once a member receives his or her PCS orders, it is up to the gaining command to help the sailor is fully aware of all policies, programs, and responsibilities.   The first 72 hours upon arriving, is said to be the most important to get the sailor on the right path. A few guidelines that can be take is to ensure transportation is available, contact FFSC to inquire about what necessities are available, assist the member in locating the exchange or commissary for immediate needs, and enrolled the sailor in the Command Indoctrination Program as soon as .
The next program is the Command Indoc Program. The member should receive command indoctrination training within 30 days of arrival. These are just a few of the following topics that should be addressed in Indoc: Navy Pride and Professionalism training, Navy Right Spirit Campaign/Alcohol Awareness, Suicide Awareness, Personal Financial Management, Operational Risk Management, Prevention of Sexual Harassment/Sexual Assault, and Anti-terrorism/Force Protection. It is imperative that all commands provide the best possible support for their newly arriving shipmates and their families.
