Bottlenecks in a Process
This paper will be identifying the main bottlenecks in the process of a morning wake up routine.
Once I have identified these steps I will be analyzing them to determine which steps of the process I will need to improve so the overall process is more efficient. The main goal of this process is to improve time management skills and reduce the time that is spent on processes that are of no value to the overall process.
A bottleneck is a type of delay where a process step has less capacity at its input than is demanded. As such, it determines the overall velocity or speed of the whole process (“How delays affect Processes and Change,â€Â 2005). Every step that is taking in the morning of my daily routine adds to the overall total of the morning process. So, by identifying each step and the amount of time spent on those steps I can eliminate some of those steps or move them to a later time in the day. For example, the average time I spend getting ready in the morning is about 90 minutes but if I were to shower at night it would eliminate 15 minutes of my morning wake-up routine. This would shorten the time a considerable amount just by moving this process to the evening. By moving this process from the morning to the evening I would be able to pick up the house before I left for work or even work on some of my homework. These two processes have much more of a value to my daily routine than taking a shower in the morning.
Another process in the morning wake-up routine that adds as a bottleneck is picking out clothes for the day. Sometimes this can take anywhere from 10-15 minutes. This process could also be easily moved to the evening time right before bedtime. The last main bottleneck to my entire process is making lunch in the morning. Deciding what I should have and making it can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes. If I at least could decide the evening...
