Breaking Free

Throughout high school I dwelled in my older siblings shadows. I struggled to become my own person, and to be recognized for who I was as an individual. It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. However, all the hardships I endured were well worth it in the end.
My older sister was beautiful, and everyone knew it, including her. Long, flowing locks of golden blonde hair graced her tan shoulders. Her perfect little nose sat in between a luscious pair of soft lips and huge sparkling green eyes. She had a perfect figure, and as soon as she gracefully and effortlessly glided through a door, all eyes were immediately glued on her. She was prom queen, captain of the cheerleading squad, made A’s and never disappointed my parents. Morgan was the envy of not only mine, but every girl’s eyes in our small town.
Then there was my brother Dylan. Dylan was a star football player and all around good guy. His perfect teeth created a smile that could brighten anyone’s day. Girls swooned over him, and teachers absolutely loved him. Standing six foot three inches, Dylan was also the epitome of “the perfect guy.”
Finally, it was my chance to be in high school. I, of course, standing five foot short with frizzy brown hair and freckles, simply could not live up to the expectations of my last name. I was awkward, and not very sociable for fear of being shunned and ignored the way my parents treated me at home.
I recall my first day of high school very vividly, every teacher’s jaw dropped in awe after hearing who my brother and sister were, and many comments like, “Wow! You sure are nothing like them!” were made. I sat alone at lunch and drew an enhanced, more beautiful version of my pitiful self the way I wished I had looked. However, I cannot say I was completely mortified, because there was not a significant difference in my home life.
