Not every woman was born with an anatomically correct body. No amounts of food and/or exercise can significantly increase the size of a woman’s breasts; therefore, surgery is the key to achieving a desired breast size. Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic surgery for modification of this particular region. According to DocShop.com, breast size is an important part of a woman’s appearance. A woman’s personal ideals of her breasts are ones that are proportionate to her body. Insecurities, feelings of self-consciousness, and anxiety from physical attractiveness result when women are unsatisfied with their breasts. As there are many reasons behind undergoing breast augmentation, women should also consider the risks involved, including: rupture of the implant, deflation, and capsular contracture.
Thousands of women undergo breast augmentation in the United States and all over the world. Statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, shown 355,671 breast augmentation surgeries conducted in the year 2008 (Ned James, 2009). This is an 11% decrease from the previous year, due to economic failures and the massive drop on Wall Street. Statistic breakdown in age groups are: close to 10,000 women ages 13-19, nearly 119,000 ages 20-39, and over 100,000 women ages 40 years old and older (Dave Stringham, 2008).
Breast enhancement improves the overall appearance of the figure by accentuating breast size and providing a more shapely body contour (DocShop, n.d.). The likeliest candidates for breast augmentation are mothers, or those with small breasts who believe their body lacks balance.
