In the previous book Hatchet 13 year old Brian Robinson was stranded in the canadian wilderness when the bush plane carrying him to see his father in alaska crashed in a lake. His pilot was killed but brian survived and swam ashore. For months he lived on the shore of the lake hunting and fishing for food and constantly fending off animals until he retrieves the emergency kit from his plane, fiddles with a radio transmitter, and is rescued. in this book Brian,s Winter Gary Paulsen (author) was thinking,what if Brian hadn’t been saved so early?, what if he hadn’t used the radio transmitter?, what if Brian had been left to confront the harsh canadian winter?

When we open the book fall has just come and brian has shortly used all of the supplies in the emergency kit he retrieved from the plane in Hatchet. The first half of the book is Brian's life during autumn, one night he awakened in the middle of the night           by the sound of metal on rock and when he looked outside he found he was staring at the rear of a large bear, he kicked it hopping to scare it off but instead it attacked him and went back to eating Brian’s leftovers, this encounter left a lasting impression on him and governed his thinking through the book. Bran also made a friend during this part of the book, while Brian was eating dinner one time , a skunk came to him looking for food   and when he refuses to give her any she threatens to spray him, after that brian named the skunk Betty and gave her food every day. When it hits him that winter is almost upon him he has a short time to prepare himself and his crude stick and mud home. he started by sewing together a rabbit skin jacket and boots, and just in time cause the next day he awoke and found his shelter door to be blocked shut. when he finally busted it open Brian found the world to be covered with a fresh coat of snow. That day Brian went hunting and encountered a moose, he shot it with an arrow but it wasn’t enough, he finished...
