Danny is a 9 year old boy who lives with his dad in an old gypsy caravan. His dad is a mechanic and runs a gas station. Danny’s dad is his hero. He teaches him all about engines and cars before he even goes to school. Every night after supper, Danny’s dad tells wonderful bedtime stories like ones about the BFG, Big Friendly Giant. One night after a great story, Danny wakes up to find that is dad is not in the caravan. He goes outside and still cannot find him. The hours pass and finally Danny’s dad returns and reveals the secret of where he has been.
Danny’s dad has been to Mr. Hazell’s property, which surrounds the gas station, to poach pheasants. Danny is surprised that his dad is poacher. It does not make sense. How could his hero be on someone else’s property poaching pheasants? Danny’s dad begins to explain about Mr. Hazell and his pheasant hunting day. This is a day all the important people, as Mr. Hazell sees it, are invited for a pheasant shoot. Mr. Hazell raises these pheasants for just one day of shooting so he can important. Danny’s dad goes on to tell Danny about his father and the ways he came up with to catch pheasants. Danny is can see the excitement in his dad as he talks about ways to catch the pheasants, but he says he is willing to give it up because he should not have left Danny alone. Danny tells his dad that he understands and wants him to continue.
The next time Danny’s dad goes out for pheasants, he tells Danny he should be back in a few hours. Danny wakes up at 2:10am and his dad is not home. He becomes concerned and decides to go find him. He decided the quickest way to get there is to take the Austin A30 from the garage where his dad has been working on it. Danny slowly drives to Mr. Hazell’s property and parks behind the hedges. He heads into the woods looking for his dad. Finally he finds him in a pit with a broken ankle. The keepers on the land had set a trap for poachers! Danny uses the car to pull his...
