The film Nanook of the North produced by Robert Flaherty filmed in 1922.   This film was the first known documentary to ever be produced.   It’s a story of life and love that takes place in the actual Arctic.   Nanook the main character of film is an Eskimo living his everyday life in the Arctic with his family.   The producer Robert Flaherty gives us his representation of everyday life in the Arctic.   In this film Robert Flaherty uses many interesting and useful tactics in order to get his point across to the audience.   He does so by creating unique camera angles throughout the film and also putting together a lot of important scenes.
The character Nanook is said to be a great hunter from the “top of the world.” Before the film even begins Flaherty gives him the nickname “The Bear” along with an explanation about the documentary.   I liked how Flaherty gives the audience an overview on the documentary before it even begins.   Which allows the audience to get an idea of what they are about to witness during this film.   Although Flaherty portrays Nanook as “The Bear” a great hunter from the north the first actual scene of Nanook seems to be misleading.   Our first look at Nanook is a close-up of him or a head shot.   In this scene we don’t see a great hunter but all we see is Nanook a man showing virtually no facial expression.   Which left me kind of puzzled at first, Nanook has a look of seriousness on his and to me that represents a feeling of harsh reality.   I felt Flaherty decided to start off the film with this scene to let audience know that this is an actually portrayal of the reality of life in the Arctic. The next scene is another head shot of one of his wife.   She was nicknamed “The smiling one.”   In this scene of Nanook’s wife all you see is a happy smiling woman.   Which gives us the since of happiness despite the harsh reality’s of surviving in the Arctic.   I think these two scenes were very important to the film because it provides...
