Shouldn’t We Use This Funding In Other Educational Areas?
~ A survey given to elementary faculty on what they feel is the reason that our board of education is not working towards having the Spanish language being taught in our classrooms currently, was responded to with the explanation that the teachers were presently being pressured to up the students math, science, and literacy test scores. But one of the amazing benefits that come along with a bilingual student is an all-around higher-scoring student. It’s true, with such research as that done in Canada, which caused for their push to implement a French structured immersion program to English-speaking-only students, have proven that students who are educated in more than one language average 90% higher literacy scores and 60% to 85% higher math and science scores than monolingual students. Even just comparing the differences of those countries with a structured immersion second-language program with those without one, show that the countries that have incorporated a second-language
Are We Sure It Will Be Possible?
~ Anything is possible, but this idea is already a way of life in other parts of the world. In fact, the vast majority of well-developed countries around the globe have a structured immersion second-language program, starting in their primary schools and continuing on through their secondary schools. Some countries currently reaping the benefits with the successful implementation of structured immersion second-language programs are: Japan, Germany, Sweden, and South Africa. Even more countries today are working towards encompassing a second-language learning program for their own prosperity and growth, like Singapore and Canada.
~Structured immersion is possible, especially the possibility of being successful with implementing it into our educational curriculum.
