Business communications as a whole has changed significantly since the beginning of the twentieth century. Communication between two customers, or even communication between two companies have changed so drastically that instead of information taking days or even weeks to be received, that same information can be exchanged in a matter of seconds, in hard copy form due to fax machines or in an electronic format due to email and internet. Discussed in this paper will be the role business communications play in day-to-day activities at work, what trends have been seen in the workplace and what message types are results of these trends.
Communications in day-to-day activities
All business communication has three basic purposes: to inform (explain), to request or persuade (urge action), and to build goodwill (make good image). The reasons employers in high positions communication with employees on an everyday basis is to motivate, to pass information, to aid decision making, and to let the employees know that there is always someone=e readily available to give the final say so on any decision. An employee may have to communicate with other employees by way of conference call, may even have to chat in a secured chat room set up solely for the purpose of uninterrupted meetings over a secure IP address. Either way, the communication used in the daily routine of business needs to be a few things to be successful. The message has to be clear and free of miscues because mistakes cost the company money. The information must be complete. Incomplete information could result in incomplete sending of a product over the wrong sending of a product.
