Butterflies Standing Still

When I was an adolescent; I was adventurous and I liked nature, especially butterflies.

I was raised in a small town surrounded by the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. Havre de Grace Maryland is the name of the town. As a little girl, growing up in a small town which had many nature gifts to offer, I was fascinated by all the things I could do, see, smell and taste. We had all kinds of trees with different kinds of fruit growing from them. One neighbor had a lemon tree in their front yard. I thought that was cool.   Fishing and going to the parks where some of my favorite things to do, but butterflies were the love of my life and captured my attention.
With all the trees around the small town, you could count on seeing countless caterpillar larvae nesting in trees getting ready for the wonderful transformation. The transformation part of the caterpillar’s life is what overwhelmed me. Seeing how weird the caterpillars looked, knowing they would turn out to be these beautiful winged creatures with different colors. Not one, no not one butterfly would be the same. I wanted them all in one place so I could look at them whenever I wanted too.

Well one day I was told I had to attend summer school in order to pass to the fifth grade. My fourth grade teacher was like the wicked witch of the south. Not only would I have to attend summer school but I would have the privilege of having the same teacher for the summer I had all year. We were not the best of friends but we did have one thing in common. She liked butterflies as much as I did.

Well, I had to do a lot of book reports that summer. I wanted to impress my teacher in a way that she would never forget me. I started collecting butterflies and gluing them onto white construction paper. I collected about twenty different types of butterflies. I researched each butterfly and made a book report.
