Lebanon, a Country of Political Instability and Ancient Beauty
Lebanon is a beautiful country with a great combination of overwhelming historic sites such as Byblos and a perfect location making it the perfect place for tourists. This is of benefit to the country as much of its income comes from tourism as well as its many services. It is very interesting how Lebanon is still able to attract a large number of tourists despite of its political status.
The small country located in the western Asia on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, with Syria to its north and east, and Israel to its south. Almost all of its area is mountainous terrain with the exception being the Beqaa Valley, which is important to Lebanon’s agriculture. (Encyclopidea Brittanica “Lebanonâ€) It has a population of 3,826,018 of which 1,826,000 live in it’s capital, Beirut. (Spencer 110-111) 58.7 % of the Lebanese population is Muslim and 40 % Christian.
Lebanon became independent on November 22 1943 and is currently a republic government. Although there is a current leader, Emile Lahoud, there are still many difficulties being faced on choosing a long term president which is leading to the country being politically unstable.( Spencer 110-111)
Although Lebanon’s climate and water availability makes it perfect for agricultural activities, its’ agricultural sector has only 12% of the total workforce making it the least popular economic sector in Lebanon. Another small sector is industry, because of it’s lack of raw materials and its complete dependency on other Arab countries for oil, industry in Lebanon is mainly limited to small businesses.
