There have been times in Canada’s history where no political government has emerged from an election with a clear majority. Of the many critics in the parliamentary system, some say that the minority government is too ineffective to govern the second largest country, Canada. It could be easily “toppled by a simple vote of non-confidence.†On the contrary, a minority government could work together with opposition governments, especially the Official Opposition Party. A minority government could be toppled easily, that is why the minority government needs to develop a good relationship with the other parties. Because a minority government could be voted down easily, it will force them to stay alert and keep on top of what they are doing and to establish the trust with its citizens. These are the many factors in which a minority government is not unwise and unstable but a government that could establish law, order and peace in the country. After considering both sides of this issue, it is apparent that a minority government in Canada had essential elements in the decision-making process for Canada.
To become successful, the minority government will need to incorporate the opposition parties’ ideas and viewpoints in order to pass legislation. The government cannot make any hasty decisions because it may be unbeneficial to the country. This includes environmental issues and international affairs. The minority government has to listen to the viewpoints from the different provinces and territories, which include the West, Atlantic, and the North instead of listening to ideas from only one region of Canada such as Ontario and Quebec with the largest population. Ideas and viewpoints are taken in and are chosen carefully so that it will benefit the whole country and everyone would agree to take those actions.
