The Federal government should become concerned with "Texting while Driving" as it is with
"Driving under the Influence".
Mobile devices are vastly becoming a problem in today’s society. Whether dialing alpha or numerically, the act of using these devices while driving, will soon become a violation while driving and ultimately result in the issuance of a citation or other legal ramifications. While this tool or method of communication has become very popular and quite convenient for most, it certainly has its cons.
Many people have become victims of cell phones and electronic communication devices. The most recent incident that comes to mind is that of a Metrolink commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train crash that occurred in September, 2008. Although, the investigation is still ongoing, the initial reports and the final review of this crash reveals that the Engineer of the Metrolink train was sending and receiving text messages, which ultimately led to him running a red light, which caused this crash. In 2007 a young woman in Arizona was texting while driving and drifted into the center lane on the freeway and collided with another motorist and they both were killed. “Az deaths revive push to outlaw text-messaging by motorists†The Arizona Republic August 15, 2007, 9:23 p.m.
Lawmakers should place this issue at the top of the agenda for immediate action. One incident is too many and there have been countless as a result of texting while driving. Absolutely, no one should suffer at the hands of someone that elects to operate a motor vehicle while texting, it is a senseless act. I compare this to driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
