Chapter 8 Discussion Questions
8.1 In your current or past workplaces, what types of tacit knowledge did experience workers posses? What did this knowledge allow them do?
I have worked and work in many different places. Overall I have learned a lot of skills by working in the jobs that I do. I have learned how to manage employees and how to work with graphic design programs, Build Websites, Create ads, data mining, Excel spreadsheets, and Database creation. Overall I feel that I have learned a lot by doing all of this and have enjoyed working and learning all these skills and have learned valuable skills that will allow me to succeed in the business world.
8.2 Companies rely on employees with substantial amounts of tacit knowledge/ Why do companies struggle when these employees leave the organization unexpectedly? What can companies do to help ensure that they retain tacit knowledge
Overall it takes approximately a year at large companies for an employee to contribute new ideas at a firm I believe that when employees leave a firm a new employee will have to work at the firm for a long period of time before learning all the procedures of a firm. Firms must seek to have a lower employee turnover and retain a larger amount of employees in order to cyt cost and insure they do not lose employees with tacit knowledge.
8.3 What does the term “expert†mean to you? What exactly do experts do that novices don’t ?
I think that having satisfied customers is key to any businesses success. Satisfied customers will return and recommend your service to friends and the best marketing scheme is word of mouth. There have been whole companies that have a relatively small marketing budget in comparison to their competitors because of word of mouth marketing. So yea I would make promotions weighted highly on the ESQi but I wouldn’t necessarily make it the only factor for promotions.
