Assignment:   Characteristics of Expository Essays

For the assignment I chose to read “A Soul as Free as the Air” and “Setting the Table”.

The characteristics that make these essays expository are they both provide evidence, facts, or examples inform the reader.   Both essays also have an introduction that contains a thesis statement and the information was presented in a nonbiased manner.

The type of organization used in the essay “A Soul as Free as the Air” was time order.   The information in the essay was organized in from one time period to another time period.   The type of organization used in the essay “Setting the Table” was the informative process.   The information about the topic was arranged in order step-by-step.

I think the author chose to use the topic type of organization for the essay “A Soul as Free as the Air” in order to inform the reader about Lucy Stone.   This type of organization was effective in informing the reader about Lucy Stone and her accomplishments. If the author would have used another type of organization like topic, the effect would have been similar.   The essay would have focused more on who Lucy Stone was rather than focusing on what Lucy Stone did.

For the essay “Setting the Table” I think the author chose to use the informative process type of organization in order to show the correct way to set a table in the right order.   This type of organization was effective in informing the reader step-by-step how to correctly set a table.   If the author chose to write another type of expository essay or use another type of organization the effect would not have been very effective in informing the reader of how to set a table correctly.   I think the author chose the correct way to present the information in this essay.
