CheckPoint Collaborative and Individual Writing Processes

Three advantages of the collaborative writing process is first the tasks are distributed among the group, which means less burden on an individual author. Second, with more people you have more ideas, more work done and so the goals are achieved more efficiently. Finally, a collaborative writing group in which each individual performs his/her duties honestly leads to an increase in experience of team-work, load-sharing, verbal, written and email communication skills, etc.
Three disadvantages of the collaborative writing process is that one with all the other people working with each other there is room for more arguments; two with all those people one person doing all the work he/she doesn’t want to share the credit which can conflict; and people can be a distraction to one another which in turns prevents the work from getting done.
An individual writing process would be preferable in the following situations: a student is far better at the schoolwork than the rest of the group, and would end up doing most of the work for the group; the student is so far below the group that the person will not benefit from the group experience; the students are not cooperative, and the teacher doesn't know how to teach or encourage cooperation, so the work by the students would be grossly uneven; a student has social problems, such as autism or Asperser Syndrome or social anxiety, such that group membership is too stressful for the student, at this time; the assignment is of a personal nature, such as writing a personal journal, writing poetry about one's own experiences, or writing personal information which the students may not wish to be shared with anyone except the instructor.
