Although we just addressed the issue of the ethical part of child labor, this topic in itself is mostly unethical. In fact, in developing countries, 16% of children are involved in child labor as opposed to 30% in the least developed countries. These are all unethical cases involving kids from 5 to 14 years old.
Many cases of child labor have hit the media loudly and were exceedingly controversial. However, one of the most famous cases that struck the world and which involved child labor was the Nike case (the much known clothing and sports brand) in the mid 90’s which did not end until recently. Tariq, a 12-year-old boy from Pakistan was pictured in a Nike factory surrounded by the Nike balls he used to make all day long. His picture compelled many human rights’ activists in Canada and the United States of America to launch campaigns against Nike accusing the aforementioned company of the exploitation of children and the outrageous violation of human rights.
Upon its entering of the market in Pakistan, Nike was almost certainly aware of the fact that child labor is practiced widely in Pakistan, and it surely ignored this fact due to the fulfillment of its strategic goal of achieving high production with the least costs possible; thus, no precautions were taken to prevent contractors from using children among their “employed” workers. In fact, international and multimillion corporations usually consciously decide to overlook the presence of child labor in their facilities. After the human rights’ activists monitored Nike and its factory all over the world, some results were very shocking to the public. It turned out that Nike was engaged in child labor in almost all the countries in which it had factories in, except in the United States of America; the countries being China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mexico, Cambodia and Pakistan.
