Cigarettes and the outcome of smoking

Cigarettes. So fun and tastey, don’t they just make you look and feel so cool? These days if you’re a non smoker, it feels like you are out of place. But what every smoker doesn’t realize or just neglects is the cost of being a smoker. The money cigarettes cost these days is outrageous, $5.00 to just under $7.00, but what most smokers just plain ignore or don’t know is that being a smoker costs something a lot more important than money, your health. I know firsthand how being a smoker impacts yourself, family, friends, and even your pets. Not only is smoking detrimental to your health, but the nicotine addiction that accompanies it.

I know from personal experience the addiction of nicotine. I used to smoke around 40 cigarettes a day, not because I wanted to, but because I had to in order to keep my mind in focus and just to get through the day without falling apart. It nags at your mind, the craving takes over and all you want is to have a cigarette. Once you are addicted and you ignore the cravings you start to lose focus of current tasks, you get irritable and pissy, and some people even get headaches. It’s not a good feeling having something so small control your day to day activities. When I decided it was time to quit, in the beginning I was enthusiastic and optimistic, confident I could do it, I kept telling myself “I’m not even very addicted this will be easy, I just won’t think about it”. But after the first day I found myself thinking about it all the time, god I wanted one so bad. I started thinking up excuses to have one, each one making me want it more, until I finally gave up on any excuse and just had one anyways. Breaking the addiction is like trying break a steel chain in half with your bare hands.
