Abdus-Sattar, Ghazali. 2001-2011: A decade of civil liberties’ erosion in America—A three part series. 25 August 2011. OpEd News Article. Web.
This three part web article series examines the key aspects of how the USA Patriot Act of 2001 has been used by the United States federal government in an attempt to dissolve, and in some cases, totally abuse the constitutional rights, principles, and inapt liberties granted by the US Constitution during the decade following the attacks of September 11, 2001. As highlighted by the author, “the so-called War on Terror has seriously compromised the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendment rights of citizens and non-citizens alike” (n.p.). Specifically, this article series details how the USA Patriot Act, whose overall purpose was intended to provide the federal government with the necessary tools to combat global terrorism through collective counterintelligence and resources, has been expanded to include intelligence gathering from not only non-citizens, but also United States citizens as well. The author clearly outlines his arguments and thoroughly analysis for the reader which aspects of our liberties are being manipulated and by whom. Moreover, through further research, it is apparent that the author and his colleagues have clearly grasped an understanding of this vital situation and have attempted to educate the public. I intend to utilize this reference source as a guide towards understanding the key arguments against the USA Patriot Act and how the powers within this piece of legislation are contesting the core liberties of freedom from unlawful search and seizures upon the citizens of the United States of America.
