When speaking of private security the public relations image and the perception of professionalism is slightly skewed. Many people pay a lot of money for safety and in many cases they are really not much safer than if they lived in a lone house on a street that opened up into a highway. The professionalism and appearance of safety, such as gated communities provide, is very enticing. This however, may not be the correct avenue to take in order to provide sound safety within and around a home or community. Private security members must maintain a high level of professionalism even though they do not have as much authority as that of the local law enforcement. It is important that private security professionals act just as professional as the local police officers because they are acting as a source of protection for individuals or communities. They must be viewed as serious and capable of protecting at any cost. Another reason why private security officers must act professional is because if they are not acting appropriately then they will create a bad name for themselves and for local law enforcement. This is turn causes all of the officers (private or public) to lose credibility with the public and it also causes issues between private and public security professionals. A negative image can greatly impact the security of any given community. If a burglar knows that the gate guard is always sleeping then they know that they are capable of sneaking past the gates. If a community has a negative image, unfortunately, this will attract the wrong type of people. When people move into a community that deal drugs, carry weapons, rob and steal the crime rate goes up drastically. Then the innocent people that cannot afford to move are stuck in a very vulnerable position. This can be fixed by making sure that professional security officers are hired and held accountable.
