The common name is Ocelot, and the scientific name is Leopardus pardalis.
Ocelots are found in the South and Central America, Mexico and in some U.S states like Texas. You can find them in rainforests and also lands with a lot of grass. A few years ago, Ocelots were considered endangered animals. Today ocelots are kept in the private hands of people since they became endangered because of humans. Humans killed ocelots to use their fur to make clothes. In the past Ocelots were kept as pets.
The color of an Ocelot ranges from white or tawny yellow to gray and reddish gray. The ocelot’s fur has many stripes and spots that are darker than the rest of its fur. The ocelot has two black stripes on each cheek, and its tail is marked with bars on the upper side. The ocelot weighs twice as much as a big house cat. The male ocelot weighs about 23 Ibs and the female ocelots weigh about 20 Ibs. Ocelots are active for 12 hours, during those 12 hours they travel between 1.8 and 7.6 kilometers to look for food. Ocelots are used of eating meat, just like other cats. They have pointed fangs that they use to kill their food. They don’t have teeth that are able to chew, so they tear the food to pieces and swallow it whole. The ocelot is known to go after larger animals like deer, anteaters, land tortoises, and squirrel monkeys. When it’s wet season, ocelots migrate fish and land crabs.
The female ocelot starts to mate at the age of 3; they can start to mate as early as 18 months. Females have litters of two to three dark colored kittens. The chances for the kitten to stay alive are very high. The mother ocelot leaves the den at nighttime to hunt for food for her babies.
