Cogito, Ergo Sum

“Cogito, Ergo Sum”

I’ve decided to write about Descartes because out of all the philosophers he stood out to me the most. Descartes view on life is very interesting, believing that true knowledge comes only through the application of pure reason. Descartes argument consist a lot of distinguishing between the real world and dream world. He argues that some dreams could be so really that you can touch, feel and see things as you would in the walking world.
In meditation Descartes decided on discovering if there is anything that he can be absolutely certain about. He first decides that he exists, because if he doubts, there must be a mind behind it to do the doubting. He believes that his mind exists but is still not too sure about the body. If in his sleep his mind can deceive his body by allowing it to sense feel and touch and make it as real as his walking life then his mind could be fed information by a stronger being which is letting him believe that he has a body attached which is holding his mind.
Descartes moves on to mention that the belief in god would lead us to the knowledge of other things. God is perfect and therefore he would never deceive us because deception is imperfection. He continues on to mention that God might be perfect but he us not, and his imperfections may be what make him perfect for his role in gods plan.
In the end Descartes finds it is safe to believe his senses. After all his sense communicate to his mind and allow it to suggest that the body exists. Descartes still believed that there is a mysterious link between the body and the mind but dismissed all his doubts of the past and decided that he could trust his senses.
