DIABETES BASICS
I have changed my expository essay topic to be Diabetes Basics.
This is a brief overview of the basics of diabetes. About one out of every seventeen people has diabetes, which is nearly 16 million people in the United States. Diabetes is when glucose has little or no ability to move out of the blood into the red blood cells. There are three types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, and gestational. Type 1 diabetes also called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus do not produce insulin and need regular shots of insulin to keep their blood glucose levels normal. Glucose is another name for sugar. People aged 20 and younger have Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes was once called juvenile onset diabetes, but through the years, it has changed since it also affects young adults. About 5 to 10 percent account with type 1 diabetes and the majority have type 2 diabetes. Family history of the disease, the white race and being at an age less than 20 are the risk factors.
