Com150 Week 2 Characteristics of Expository Essays

The characteristics that make these two essays expository essays is the fact they both use evidence, facts or some sort of example to explain the thesis. Also, the writer presents the information in a non-biased point of view.

The organization in both essays is different. The essay 'Setting the Table' is organized in a step by step process that describes how to do something. The author made an excellent choice with this method since when cooking a how to type of essay works well. Another method that would have been just as effective is to write the paper in a time order format from the first person point of view. This is commonly referred to as an 'informative essay'. The other essay 'Cochlear Implants' is based on the author's experience and is organized in a 'time order' format. This was very effective for me since it gave sound information about the implants from the veiw of the author. Another way would have been using the topic format. This would have worked very well by going over each major benefit of the implants then wrapping it up with the overall benefits.

Both essays are similar since they both are informative essays and present a strong case for the reason to agree with the author. They differ in how the message is delivered and the reason for the message. The essay 'Setting the Table' tries to show by a logical step by step guide why it is important to provide a pleasant setting for your guest. Using common sense it does seem the right thing to do so that the guest will see the meal as a culinary experience to remember and not just a simple dinner. The essay 'Cochlear Implants' attempts to use a timeline of the author's own experience to ahow why the implants when needed are a great idea and worth the investment. It shows how the author encountered a drastic situation that could have been avoided if the author had taken the initiative to get the implants.
