In business, depending on one’s schedule, an individual may prefer that you communicate via email, voice mail or in person, for example, a person who is constantly on the road may prefer you send them an email. By doing so it may give them time read and pay attention to its contents when they are no longer traveling and have some down time. -Another individual who tends to receive large amounts of email may prefer a voice message or in person visit especially if dealing with critical issues. Regardless to a person’s preference or situation, good communication is a critical tool to have and master.
No matter what you choose as your career of choice, collaboration and communication are necessary tools that can help garner ones success as a professional. Whether you work in an office or telecommute, collaboration in some form is necessary in the successful running of a business. In today’s society all careers require collaboration. How well you’re able to collaborate could be the key to a successful career. In order to be a successful as a communicator and collaborator, you must first gage where your strengths or weakness are in these areas. According to Professor Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory, an individual has at least eight intelligences that can aid them in day to day life. Verbal -linguistic, visual –spatial and interpersonal are the three intelligence styles and organizer giver and thinker are the three personality types I’ll be focusing on.
An individual with a verbal-linguistic intelligence has the ability to communicate through language (listening, reading, writing and speaking). People with this intelligence tend to be very good listeners without trying to solve your problems. Creative writing in the form of poetry or short stories is another way they express themselves.
