As the medical assistant, you worked with three different marginalized populations. Briefly describe each population and provide one communication tip for each. |
Population | Communication Tip |
Elderly | Keep patient in positive mood.   Diffuse extra anxiety above that which naturally occurs in a setting such as this. |
Little or no English | Make the patient comfortable with friendly dialogue and aknowledge something important to the patient. |
Stereotyping by physical appearance | Conern for the patient's health and not physical appearance.   |

Different communication skills are needed for different marginalized populations.   Some marginalized populations are ready for a communication gap because they have dealt with it before.   Similar to deaf people who will carry a pad of paper and pen around to communicate with people that can hear and do not understand sign language.   Other marginalized populations are more difficult to even break the ice.   Sometimes a third party is needed to be an interpreter or support what the patient is trying to relay.   Take the time to learn more ways to communicate from others or through classes....
