Community and Problem Solving Policing

Community Policing and problem solving is what is needed in order to control criminal activity. Looking back in time, crime has occurred due to ineffective policing methods. Over the years, police organizations have learned that getting the community involved in fighting crime makes the community members feel safer, and gives them a sense of pride about the community they live in. This paper will discuss the different aspects of community policing and problem solving, and the impact it has between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Community policing is a partnership between the community and a local law enforcement agency designed to identify community problems with criminal activity. The law enforcement agency provides guidance to enhance the safety of the community. Community policing is an ever changing preventative measure to ensure that crime is effectively being combated. The methods of the past do not necessarily work as effective in today’s world, due to the changing character of American communities (Bureau of Justice Assistance, 1994). Communities are plagued with a variety of criminal activity such as illegal drugs, gang violence, robberies, murders, car theft, and burglaries.
Today’s criminal have become more aggressive, more familiar with police tactics, and less willing to comply when demanded. There are more divorce rates and children growing up in single parent homes today than before and thus single parents find it difficult to spend quality time with the child. Schools and churches are not able to bridge the gap with the children either. Without the presence of a role model in the household, children are more prone to act out, or satisfy their curiosity through other means.
