Compare and Contrast Essay
What would it be like to choose life just like a path or a simple road? The two poems that were analyzed are “The Road Not Taken†by Robert Frost and “Song of the Open Road†by Walt Whitman. In the poems, they both share common symbolism and repetition but also have very different rhyming schemes which reflect that the poems are about the same topic but different times and places.
Symbolism was a major role in both poems. Symbols are words that mean something completely different. For instance the road symbolizes life and the two different paths are choices you make in life. The traveler symbolizes the person who is making the choice. In the poem “The Road Not Taken†(L.1) it states that “two roads divergeâ€. This is symbolizing two different paths of life. Also in the poem “Song of the Open Road†(L.1) it states “afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road†This symbolizes how the traveler is on a path of life. It gives the reader a sense of what’s to come in the future.
The poems by Walt Whitman and Robert Frost are similar because of the use of repetition. Repetition is the repeating of the same word throughout the context. It uses road twice in the text so this is a form of repetition. On (L.2, 3 and 4) it says “and sorry I could not travel both, and one is one traveler, long I stood, and looked down one as far as I couldâ€. The text
repeats and in a specific order which is also a form of repetition. It gives the reader more interest in the poems.
“The Road Not Taken†and “Song of the Open Road†both have a very different rhyme scheme. Rhyming is the repeating of words that look alike and sound alike in a specific pattern. On (L.1 and 2) of “The Road Not Taken†it states “two roads diverge in a yellow...
