COMPARATIVE ESSAY
Innocence that is Zohra and Gaston, what they symbolize, and how they had effect on their society.
The dishonesty and selfishness that is portrayed in both ‘Wonderful Fool’ and ‘Miramar’ suggest that there is a lost of trust and hope in every changing society. This is overcome by the purity of an individual who has been looked down upon by society. The expectations people have of Zohra from ‘Miramar’ and Gaston from ‘Wonderful Fool’ causes conflicts between them and the other characters. This source of conflict only brings out the best from Zohra and Gaston, and it inspires them to go beyond that expectation and fight for their own individuality. These two characters both symbolize hope and freedom in their society. Gaston from ‘Wonderful Fool’ is portrayed as a Christ like figure, a naïve, and honest man who is willing to reach out to others with an open heart. He comes without a hidden agenda. In the novel Gaston is able to keep his trust in others even when they have deceived him. He would gladly take the blows for others without thinking twice about it nor having the slightest regret. Through this kind of behavior people (society) was able to find understanding and compassion in Gaston. A single pinch of hope that opened doors to the fact that it was okay to trust again and to simply care for others. Zohra of ‘Miramar’ on the other hand symbolizes hope and freedom, the ideal embodiment of Egypt, she is portrayed as an innocent child to Amer Wagdi, a voluptuous lover to Sarhan al-Beheiry, and a naïve country girl who is easily manipulated by others. She tells us of her dreams only through the voice of the other four narrators, Zohra is an individual robbed of her freedom and voice in the crowded city.
These two characters are similar in a way that they are both alienated by the society they are in, Zohra, a country girl who moved to the city and in Gaston’s case he is a foreigner in Japan. The...
