CONCEPTS OF CRIME, LAW, AND CRIMINOLOGY


Criminology is the scientific study of criminals, crime, criminal behavior, and the criminal justice system.   There are three important areas of interest to study for criminologists, how criminal law developed and the laws use to define crime, what causes violation of laws, and what methods are used to control criminal behavior.  
Scientific methods are used to study the nature, extent, cause, and control of criminal behavior.   Criminologists study factors that are related to crimes.   Research in criminology involves fields such as sociology, psychology, and psychiatry.      
Social philosophers strived to obtain a reasonable and fair relationship between crimes and the punishment for crimes in the eighteenth century.   This philosophy is based on the premise that behavior happens when the person performing it considers it useful, purposeful, and reasonable.   Cesare Beccaria, a reformer, believed that people wanted to attain pleasure and evade pain, so people who commit crimes get some type of pleasure out of it.   His writings and the writings of his followers are known as classical criminology today.   This observation was a guide to crime, law, and justice for almost one hundred years.
August Compte believed that people went through stages grouped on the basis of the way people try to understand the world they live in with the final stage being the positive stage.   There are two main elements to positivism.   The first is that human behavior is a function of forces beyond a person’s control and the second is that the scientific method is used to solve problems.  
There are six secondary areas of criminal statistics.   Criminal statistics are concerned with measuring the amounts and trends of criminal activity.   The sociology of law involves the role social forces play in shaping criminal law and the role criminal’s plays in shaping society.   Theory development should be based on social facts that can be...
