Conservation means to use natural resources in such a way that they have time to replenish themselves, whereas preservation is leaving nature in tact without using the resources that may be available on the land. Preservation ensures that the ecostructure is undisturbed by human interference, such as mining and drilling.
I do feel that humans can harvest forests in a responsible manor which is environmentally friendly. We simply must put as much effort into giving back to the Earth as we do taking from it. Until recently this has not been a high priority though. I further believe that national parks should remain untouched by humans simply for the sake of economic gain. We have overtaken much of the land for pure greed, and we cannot replenish the natural resources as fast as we are consuming them. For this reason, we should have some land that is simply off limits in order to maintain some semblance of our original ecosystem. Simply because we may not see the immediate harm caused by our intrusion into nature and the extinction of some species does not mean that it is not occurring.
Wildlife would be in jeopardy if the Bridger Teton National Forest were to be explored for usable energy, further disrupting our ecosystem (Bridger Teton Video Learning Resource). Even if there are usable resources available on the land, it does not mean that we have to harvest them and destroy yet another national park.
I believe that we as a society can find other means to produce the energy that is needed to keep our society functional. If people were more conscious of their usage of resources and stopped using them unnecessarily that would give science a chance at creating new forms of energy through research. Perhaps focusing a portion of the money that would be spent to destroy natural habitats could be instead used to formulate new ways to produce energy that would not have a prerequisite of harming the ecosystem.
It was mentioned that “America faces a major energy...
