CheckPoint: Conservation and Preservation
Conservation is conserving the earth by actively cutting back on things consumed by humans. Humans must take an active role in conserving the Earth’s natural resources. Each person must look into their own lives and make decisions based on the sustainability of the environment. Preservation is preserving the biological diversity of the Earth’s eco-system. Humans must keep a balance in the ecology to preserve the Earth’s natural resources. (Berg & Hager, 2007)
Humans will not harvest a forest’s resources in an environmentally friendly way. The resources are obtained by killing the eco-systems of all life-forms in the forest. Roads are built, trees are taken down, and many other methods are used. National forests should be left in their natural state because humans will only tear them down.
The Bridger Teton National Forest in western Wyoming should be left untouched by human presence. Other than fishing, hunting, and general recreation, the national forest should remain intact. Mining, logging, and oil and gas exploration will destroy the largest intact eco-system in the lower 48 states. Known as management area 71, some believe there is enough oil and gas in the national forest to offset America’s dependence on foreign supplies. (Berg, n.d.)
America needs to find other ways of developing oil and gas, mining and logging. Ruining our eco-systems is killing the Earth. We all need to learn to live with less and take a more active role in conservation as well as preservation.
