Context of Power

Power brings both choice and responsibility. The way in which power is used is vital. Power brings responsibilities upon characters that have not experienced positions of power before. They have positions of responsibility over other characters.   With this power also comes choice. The choices that are made by characters in power are extremely important. They need to be responsible and make the right choice; good or evil. The outcomes within all three texts are greatly affected by the choices certain characters make.

Responsibility is a major component of power. Each and every character has to use their power responsibly to make the right decisions. However, some characters with power in the three texts use their responsibility for their own self-gain. Macbeth is responsible for all the murders during the play. Although Lady Macbeth persuaded him to go through with murdering Duncan he did have the choice. Irresponsibly he killed Duncan and made matters worse by continuing these murders through fear someone would discover it was him. Atticus Finch holds great responsibility throughout To Kill A Mockingbird. He holds much of it over Jem and Scout but also within the town of Maycomb. Many people in the town look up to him, as he is a man of power. He holds himself responsible for the blacks in the town and acts as a lawyer for them. He uses this responsibility as best he can and defends them in court. Although it is impossible for him to win with a white jury, people of Maycomb, particularly blacks, are deeply grateful for all he does. Napoleon gains a large amount of power and therefore responsibility, throughout the novel. He puts himself into a position of power and becomes responsible for all decisions made on Animal Farm. He is responsible for the changing of the rules, he lets the pigs get away with too much. He does not understand the affect of power and responsibility can change anything into disaster.
