Course Description:
Provides a study of United States development from the period of Reconstruction to the present. Topics include politics, economics, geography, social issues and reforms as related to contemporary society. College level reading and writing skills are required.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
• Describe the reasons Reconstruction was an era of conflict and controversy.
• Describe the major issues and results of the political elections of the Gilded Era (1876-1900).
• Describe the impact of the transcontinental railroads and industrialization on American life in the Gilded Era.
• Describe the major factors in the rapid westward expansion and closing of the Western frontier in the last half of the 19th century.
• Explain the causes and goals for the Populist Movement and other farm groups.
• Describe the causes and results of the Spanish-American War.
• Describe the rise of labor unions and the influence of rapid immigration into the United States.
• Describe the achievements of the Progressive Movement.
• Explain the causes and results of World War I.
• Describe contrasts of political conservatism and social conflict in the 1920s (Jazz Age).
• Describe the major programs of New Deal, their impact on American people at the time and the effects on future politics and economics.
