Cosmetic Surgery Benefits vs Risks

When we hear the term “cosmetic surgery”, what is that we think of?   Human nature dictates that we think of the beautification process, when in actuality the term cosmetic surgery encompasses an area of much wider range.   In the lines of this essay, we will explore some of these areas and discuss the benefits versus the risks.
The most accurate definition of the term “cosmetic surgery” can be found in the Encyclopedia of Surgery: A Guide for Patients and Caregivers as is defined as follows:  
Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery refers to a variety of operations performed in order to repair or restore body parts to look normal, or to change a body part to look better. These types of surgery are highly specialized. They are characterized by careful preparation of a person's skin and tissues, by precise cutting and suturing techniques, and by care taken to minimize scarring. Recent advances in the development of miniaturized instruments, new materials for artificial limbs and body parts, and improved surgical techniques have expanded the range of plastic surgery procedures that can be performed. When considering cosmetic surgery it is important to compare the benefits gained through better health and elevated self-esteem to the risks associated with surgery.
To gain a better understanding of these benefits and risks you can break the definition down and separate cosmetic surgery into two types.   The first type of cosmetic surgery we will review is corrective surgery followed by the most commonly thought of surgery which is for the purpose of self-beautification.   When researching cosmetic surgery it is important to investigate both forms.
