What Causes Child Abuse?
Child abuse is so prevalent in today’s society. Children born into poor economic conditions are more prone to abuse. Due to the stress of finances, job responsibilities, and childcare, parents tend to let their frustrations build up and eventually releasing it on the unsuspecting children. Since the abuser cannot take their anger out on a superior or someone the same size, the children are their scapegoat. These parents allow family and friends in their homes to care for their children who sometimes emotionally, physically or sexually abuse these children. The rise in drug use is another cause of these children being abused. Abusers find it easy to manipulate children because they feel there are no repercussions for their actions. It is also difficult to discover because the child is either too embarrassed or afraid to report it. Children are preyed upon because they are so vulnerable and innocent and unable to fend for themselves. Whenever there is abuse the perpetrators try to place the blame on the child who feels it is their fault. Parents know how much these children rely on them; for food, clothing, shelter, love and affection, and then these parents turn on them.
Or could it be that child abuse is caused by adults’ lack of self-control. Parents who have pent up anger and frustrations from their jobs, relationships or financial problems take out their anger and frustrations on the children by yelling at them or spanking them. Sometimes the abuse is so severe these children end up in the hospital with broken bones and or fractured skulls. After the abuse they tell these children it is their fault, “I’m sorry that I hurt you, If only you...†a common phrase these children hear after the abuse has taken place. Many of these parents have no one to turn to for support to help them with their children when they are under stress.
