Crime Control and Due Process Models
Crime control model refers to a theory of criminal justice, which places emphasis on reducing the crime in society through increased police and prosecutorial powers. It prioritizes the power of the government to protect society, with less emphasis in individual liberties. Due process model refers to the type of justice system, which is based on the principle that a citizen has some absolute rights and cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or safe guards. Due process includes both procedural and substantive aspects. The difference between the two are that one model (crime control) places emphasis on the enforcement and prosecution of criminals, while the other model (due process) means that emphasis is to be placed on limiting the scope of the laws and focusing more on the individual liberties and freedom. I think that both crime control and due process models are equally effective. They both have different jobs that have to be done. Crime control model is what helps keep the streets and our neighborhoods safe and crime free. Due process is how our streets and neighborhoods stay crime free. It helps keeps the criminals behind bars. I that that if we did not have one or the other the crime rate would be so high that we would not be able to live safely in our homes. People would not be able to walk the streets without having fear of being robbed, hurt, kidnapped, or killed. Both of these two models, crime control and due process, are effective and important to our country.
