Critical Review Black Boy

The novel Black Boy is an autobiographical story of the life of the author Richard Wright. This novel is based in the Deep South, the “Jim Crow” south, during the early 1900’s.   The flow of the book makes it an enjoyable and easy read.
Richard Wright describes the pain that he had to endure growing up during this horrible time of our history. This is the story of a young boy and his family where the dad leaves the family to be with another woman; the mother, brother, and Richard left alone at home. The mother tries to support herself and her sons but she can’t. IT is the story of the young man who is extremely intelligent but cannot fully grasp racism and why he must be subjected the cruelty that surrounds him.
The author of Black Boy is not blatantly criticizing however he causes the reader to criticize through his detailed and horrible descriptions of what he endures while growing up. However, Wright is able to break through theses racial barriers. Richard is often beat by his own family in this novel. He is forced to defend himself in horrible ways.
After years of studying racism and the horrible events that have occurred to blacks and other minorities like lynching, this book does not really cause the reader to feel new horrible feelings about those events. However, the reader is forced to sympathize with Wright because the events are horrible that he endures. The book talks about his life as an underdog and how hard it was. It is clear that Wright has a lot of hidden anger due to the things he has gone through. This book was, however, a little to long. It could have easily been shortened and the message would have still been clear. The book can also be seen as a   direct attack on the racist Southern White society, which can cause problems.
Richard A. Wright is also the author of Native Son and The Outsider. He was born into poverty on a plantation in Mississippi. His grandparents had been slaves. His mother was a schoolteacher in Memphis...
