Three fatalities at an intersection, with a fallen stop sign, become blamed onto three suspects that have no proven connection to the scene. The event took place between 10:30 pm - 12 am, at an intersection near Tim’s café in Tampa, Florida. It was an accident involving an eight-ton truck and a car with three friends. The result was the death of those in the car and the blame, placed onto a nearby fallen stop sign. Mike Clary states in “For Fallen Stop Sign, Vandals Face Life” that although there was three deaths, it leaned more towards being an accident, as the fallen stop sign was tampered with as a prank, rather then with the intention of causing serious harm. Although three people (Thomas Miller, Nissa Baille, & Christopher Cole) are being charged with the deaths at the intersection, there is not any real evidence at the accident scene that proves if the fallen stop sign truly was the fault of the three. The article is written so that it would aim for and attract the attention of the types of people who would sometimes pull pranks, such as vandalism of signs, without considering the worst possible outcome, but Clary doesn’t give enough information in the article to allow the use of reason but jus enough to affect people’s judgment with emotions.
The incident at Tampa, Florida that was caused by a fallen stop sign was instantly blamed towards three people. “…in what is believed to be the first case in the U.S. in which the vandalism of a traffic sign has led to a multiple manslaughter conviction,” (p.802, 8). Though the three were blamed, many thought of it as a prank and the three should not be as severely punished. The stop sign, the supposed cause of the incident, was said to be on the ground for several days. This shows that, though three people had lost their lives, many who previously passed through the intersection suffered no injury of any kind, which then makes it unsure if the fault is truly placed on the stop sign being visible.
