Week 7 Assignment Argument Evaluation
Controlling Irrational Fears after 9/11
In this article the first argument (premise) that I recognized was how the panic after 9/11 was extremely elevated based on the number of deaths that were a result of 9/11. As a result (conclusion) of Americans being traumatized by this event, it only added to the triumph of the terrorist who were to blame.
Did this premise support the conclusion? I would have to agree that it was supportive and the author was able to validate the conclusion. To help the author validate his conclusion he used facts such as the earthquake in Gujarat, India that killed about 20,000 people and in 2001 there were more Americans killed in car accidents then those who were killed in 9/11. These are other causes of death that had a high fatality rate just as the terror attack. Although some of the statistics were higher than that of 9/11, the reaction of the attack was more hysterical, where the others were not.
The way that Americans handled 9/11 was unreasonable, we were frightened at the thought of being attack again. This sense of helplessness only added to the triumph of the terrorists, with this being said I found this to be inductively strong.
It is hard to provide evidence that the way Americans reacted to 9/11 was indeed irrational in comparison to the other tragedies such as Pearl Harbor in which the author referred to in the article. The author tries to make to match up to the reaction other tragedies such as car accidents, and how we should look at that as being more frightening. The difference is that accidents are unintentional, where as the attack of 9/11 was intentional which had a more emotional effect on Americans. Therefore I believe this to be plausibly true.
The second dispute (premise) was the way that the country had responded to the attack on 9/11 and the irresponsible use of government money to help thwart any future attacks or attempts. As a result it did not make...
