• What information about race and ethnicity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to specific minority groups?
• Have you learned something new about your own cultural history?
• Trends in immigration will continue to shape the face of the United States. What will this face look like in the year 2050?
• How might the country best prepare for the changing race and ethnicity of its current and future citizens
I think just about everything in this class was helpful in understanding the most common minority groups. The general knowledge of the terms that sometimes get used so loosely and incorrectly were definitely a big help in understanding certain things throughout this course. I didn’t know too much about Irish Americans, I had fallen under the understanding that they were mostly laborers and didn’t do much else, I was surprised to see that they also were house keepers, nannies, and other more domestic jobs in the past. I think the face of the united states is going to change in such a way that the people considered minorities in the past will be the majority and the majority will become the minority and those tables will turn, I don’t think it will be a total pleasant experience, I think its one that some people may need to live to see and understand how we as a country have treated those who are different. As I’ve said many times during this course, Education, education, education! Understanding and compassion is key to building strong relationships between people and groups of people. I do think that having an African American president is a step in helping some understand that this world is changing and we as humans need to adjust our attitudes and deal with it.
