Curtural Diversity Week 4 Discussion Questions
DQ 1: The United States was founded by immigrants, so why is immigration such a controversial issue now?
Answer:
It was NOT founded by immigrants. It was founded by COLONISTS. There was no "country" here to immigrate to. Nor did the Native Americans have immigration laws so there were no illegal aliens either.
Immigration is a controversial issue now because we're talking about ILLEGAL ALIENS now, not immigrants. Immigrants apply to us for the right to come and live here. They agree to follow the laws and to be self-supporting. Illegal aliens think our laws don't apply to them; that the only thing that matters is what THEY want. They have no concern for the well-being of this society; their only concern is their own benefit.
When illegal immigration accounts for as many entrants to the U.S. as legal immigration, it's a problem. Particularly when most of both are unskilled, uneducated and believe themselves entitled to welfare and social services. Legal immigrants who have been here less than five years and who are supposed to be self-supporting suing MA for health insurance. You might also note that there hasn't been a "good" time for amnesty since 2000, when we extended 245(i) to allow illegal aliens to legalize if they had a sponsor. Funny, but all that produced was a rush for yet more illegal aliens to come here. Which is why a mass amnesty since has been such a non starter, even in off years and even when the economy was good.
