Curriculum Focus For Tiny Tots 2011/2012 Academic Year
Good afternoon parents and welcome to this year’s curriculum focus. My name is DANNY   LEEWARD assisted by Mrs. FLORENCE AKUSHI, Ms BERNADETTE SAKYI and Mrs. COMFORT BOTCHWAY. Together we will be responsible for your children this academic year.

The purpose for this gathering is to give you an insight into what your children will be taken through in nursery one (1). Since our school practices the Montessori method of education, may I kindly crave your indulgence to let you into this method briefly.

The Montessori method of education was discovered by an Italian   doctor called Maria Montessori. She worked with mentally deficient children. In the course of her duty, she became convinced that the children could profit from and educational system specially designed for them. So she designed special learning aids based on her observation in response to their needs and interest. She later realized that these materials could also be beneficial to normal child to reach   higher academic standards. The Montessori method of education was then born.

This method of education focuses on five areas namely practical life, sensorial, language, number work and cultural studies.

PRACTICAL LIFE : This is the day to day activities performed by the children. Practical life exercises are the foundation of the Montessori environment. Practical life has three areas which are the exercise to develop manipulative skill and coordination, the exercise to promote self-development and the exercise for the care of environment.

The manipulative skill and coordination exercise helps your children to develop both large and small motor movement, encourage better hand to eye coordination dexterity. These include the rolling and unrolling of mat, sitting and standing up, carrying of chairs, handling objects in the classroom, pegging, pouring and spooning.
