Cyber bullying roles are familiar
In this article Dr. Agatston National Bullying expert and co-author of Cyber Bullying Bulling in the Digital Age, explains that the essence of bullying and the reactions from those exposed haven’t changed over time and it doesn’t matter if the bullying is on the playground or online. She stated that the kids who are most at risk to be bullied offline are most at risk of being bullied online. Dr. Agatston said that studies have shown that cyber bullying has not increased the number of bullying cases but has provided yet another setting for bullies to use something that will give them access to a larger opportunity with their victims. Cyber bullying is a great way to spread gossip and rumors. Girls use it more often, but boys use it too. Says Dr. Agatston. Examples that included girls altering a photo of another girl to make it appear she was pregnant and them posting it online and another group of girls posting an overweight female student’s weight online. One benefit of cyber bullying is that it leaves a trial of digital evidence. Like Nasty text messages or Facebook posts can be shown to the parents of the bullies as proof of what their children are doing. Another way is that the internet can be used to fight bullying is that students who want to defend the victims but do not have the courage to stand up to the bullies by sending positive messages of support to the victim. Said Dr. Agatston.
Dr. Agatston said that one of the most effective ways to combat cyber bullying is for educators and parents to teach children about digital citizenship. She also stated the parents need to educate themselves and be aware of the technology their children are using.
