Rough Draft

D.H. Lawrence’s works were controversial due to political, anti-democratic statements, and sexual content, which pushed many limits at the turn of the century.   During his life he may not have received the attention, well, he did receive a lot of attention, but not so positive.   The type of positive attention he well deserved.   The type of attention he received was all criticism directed straight at his works.
One of the things that stirred up controversy was the fact that Lewis dismissed democracy as a sham and argued that economic and ideological manipulation was the dominant factor of democracy.   People weren’t used to hearing anything that opposed how things were.   He was one of the pioneers on speaking his mind about the government.
He had a very vivid picture on how relations should be. In his book Women in Love, the characters are partially based on Lawrence and his wife, and John Middleton Murray and his wife Katherine Mansfield. The friends shared a house in England. Lawrence used the English composer Philip Heseltine as the basis for Julius Halliday, who never wanted to be involved in the book. When the book fell into Heseltine's hands no other copies existed he used it as toilet paper, it would later be banned either way due to its steamy, sexual content
This simple following quote of D.H. Lawrence may explain why much of his literature was banned during his time.   “But it needs a certain natural gift to become a loose woman or prostitute.   If you haven’t got the qualities to attract loose men, what are you to do?”   Basically stating its ok to be a prostitute, what other choice do you have if you attract lustful men, and he continued writing books with this theory.   Once again, people at the turn of the century were not used to reading anything that went on behind closed doors, which meant to stay sacred.   People believed he was “desecrating” what was something to stay behind clothes doors.
